The power of mentorship: Mathilde Pestel's journey

Mentorship is a powerful tool, not only for those seeking experience but also for those who already have it. At Sopra Steria, we value mentorship because we understand the importance of experience and knowledge sharing. After all, people are at the heart of everything we do. 


Meet Mathilde Pestel, business consultant and analyst at Sopra Steria Benelux. Since joining in 2023, her journey has been shaped not only by the projects she leads but also by the people she learns from especially her mentor, Fleur. 


What is your mentoring experience like? 

Our mentoring sessions strike a balance between professionalism and genuine connection. There’s structure, goal setting and reflection, but also room for questions, challenges and even laughter. What I value most is the trust we’ve built. That safe space allows me to take risks, be curious and grow with confidence. 


What have you learned from Fleur? 

Her presence stands out. Fleur leads with clarity, empathy and calm, even in high-pressure situations. She brings perspective where others see stress and encourages growth over perfection. That mindset has had a lasting impact on how I approach challenges. 


Have you faced challenges together?  

Definitely. We’ve managed tight deadlines and complex workloads, and as someone who strives for excellence, that can be demanding. But Fleur always knows how to cut through the noise. Her honest communication and steady support have helped me stay grounded and keep moving forward. 


How do you maintain the connection? 

It goes beyond job titles. We understand each other as people, not just colleagues. While I wouldn’t call it a traditional friendship, there’s genuine respect and ease. When time allows, we catch up outside of work, whether that’s over dinner or simply chatting about life. These moments strengthen our bond and enhance the way we work together. 


Any standout moments? 

Two come to mind: winning our first NATO contract, a milestone we were both proud of and an internal presentation we delivered together. Preparing for it was genuinely enjoyable, and I think our connection really came across to the audience. When collaboration clicks, it’s clear to see. 


Why is mentoring valuable at Sopra Steria?  

Fleur created a space where I could be myself, ask questions, share ideas and learn without judgement. She’s a strong advocate for her team and truly believes in developing people. That support has helped me grow both professionally and personally. 


Any advice for future mentors or mentees? 

Mentorship isn’t just about guidance it’s about growth. It offers space to reflect, challenge assumptions and shape your path with clarity and support. You don’t need to follow in someone’s footsteps; you can walk alongside them and learn as you go. 


At Sopra Steria, mentoring doesn’t just help individuals thrive. It builds stronger teams, more empathetic leadership, and a culture of support. I’m proud to be part of that.
