How low-code helped us slash the time to production by 80%
We rise above any pharmaceutical challenge
If a client wants to radically speed up vaccine development and make their process more sustainable, how would you approach it? At Sopra Steria, we thrive on challenges like this. Our cross-functional, international Sopra Steria team challenged conventions and cut through paper-heavy bottlenecks. By doing so, we turned an 18-month production cycle into just a few weeks. Here's how.
The bottleneck: from red tape to rapid results
The client's request was bold: reduce R&D production time by 80%. Luckily, we already knew where the bottleneck lay: hundreds of pages of paper-based clinical batch records to be printed, read, and signed manually for every product iteration. Not only was this process slow, it was error-prone and wasteful. We knew we could fix that.
The role Sopra Steria played
We assembled a cross-border team of experts from Belgium, the Netherlands, France, India, and Poland. From developers and testers to compliance experts and project managers. With our Mendix team and our Pharma and Life Science capabilities, we got to work. Nothing straightforward about this, though. We were going to apply low-code: a faster, more visual way to build software that requires little manual coding. Our client had never worked with it before, and neither had we built a Manufacturing Execution System (MES) using it. Together, we embraced the unknown.
In less than 9 months, we built and implemented our MES platform that digitises and optimises the entire clinical batch record process. At the end, we didn’t only cut time. We also made the process more sustainable and made sure vaccines were brought to market a lot quicker than before.
Behind the screens: Aswin’s story
Aswin was involved from technical ownership in the bid phase to leading the architectural setup in Sprint 0. “What makes me proud is not just the solution,” he reflects, “but how we grew as a team, how we learned new skills, and how we pushed boundaries together. It’s hands down one of the best teams I’ve ever worked with.”
This was more than a client win. It was a moment of company-wide pride. The project drew high-level attention across Sopra Steria, sparked two follow-up projects, and became a model for how we work across borders and disciplines.
Why this project matters
From a global pandemic to local production labs, timing is everything. Projects like this prove how Sopra Steria delivers technology with purpose. We accelerate science, shape outcomes, and empower teams to do their best work.
Will you rise above any pharmaceutical challenge, too?
Want to shape the future of pharma? Or maybe aerospace, defence, or logistics feel more like your playground?
Wherever your passion lies, there’s a challenge waiting for you at Sopra Steria.
The world is how we shape it. Let’s shape it together.
Rise above any pharmaceutical challenge
Turning an 18-month pharmaceutical R&D cycle into just a few weeks? That’s exactly what Aswin van Braam and his team did using low-code to digitise and accelerate clinical production processes.
